For most of the Indian media, Raj Kundra became a person of greater interest when he got engaged to actress Shilpa Shetty, with whom he co-owns the Indian Premier League.IPL) Cricket team Rajasthan Royals. His father moved from Punjab to London at the age of 45, where he became a bus conductor before running a small business. A college dropout at the age of 18, Kundra started his own business of buying pashmina shawls from Nepal and selling them to all the leading fashion houses in Britain. Then he got involved in diamond trading in Dubai. Kundra is said to have had stakes in around ten companies dealing in trading, construction, real estate, energy, steel, equities, media, sports and gold trading in the UK. As of 2004, a UK magazine Success ranked him the 198th richest British Asian.
Shetty and Kundra met in 2007 and tied the knot two years later. He had started taking interest in producing Bollywood films by then. The couple also invested in the Rajasthan Royals franchise and became co-owners. The team won the first edition of the IPL, propelling Kundra to the big leagues.
betting dispute
Rajasthan Royals, a former co-owner of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team, was banned for life from cricket after being accused of betting. Kundra and former ICC chief N. Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was found guilty of betting. However, Kundra had filed a petition in the Supreme Court in 2018 after being given a clean chit by the Delhi Police.
fraud textile company
In 2017, a textile company accused Kundra of fraud of Rs 24 lakh. In the complaint lodged, the textile company has said that the money collected by Raj Kundra and his wife actress Shilpa Shetty in the name of the particular company was never given to them. The police had registered a complaint against him.
bitcoin scam
In 2018, Raj was allegedly involved in a bitcoin scam. According to the Pune crime branch, some Bollywood actors were promoting an illegal scam to put money in bitcoins. After the police came down heavily on this racket, a lot of money was recovered. It is said that up to Rs 2,000 crore was recovered.
ugly quarrel with ex-wife
Raj Kundra, in a recent interview to an entertainment portal, alleged that his ex-wife Kavita was having an affair with her former brother-in-law. His statement came after his ex-wife told Shilpa Shetty the reason for their separation.
accused of producing pornographic material
A senior official said that the Mumbai Police has arrested Kundra for allegedly making obscene films and publishing them through certain apps. The official said on Monday that Kundra appears to be the “key conspirator” of the case. The businessman was taken into custody by the Crime Branch on Monday after registering a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Information Technology. IT) Act, he said.
