Rain spoils game for PWD; 20 projects stalled Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

Thiruvananthapuram: The incessant rain in the district for the past one week may have taken a break for a while, but it has certainly left a lasting impact on various ongoing projects of the public. Works Department (Public Works Department) in the state capital.
According to PWD officials in the district, there are around 20 projects in the district. Street Both major and minor works have come to a standstill due to the rains.
The reason for this problem has been told by the officials of the department that there is lack of window for drying the raw material used in road surfacing works.
According to District Public Works Department officials, the projects to be affected are those where surfacing work is pending.
Road surfacing is done using a mixture of crushed rocks and bitumen. The crushed rocks need to dry properly for the mixture to be strong. Otherwise, the bitumen bond will weaken and it will be washed away during further rains.
PWD executive engineer (Thiruvananthapuram division) R Jyothi said, “Though the incessant rain has stopped, we are still getting intermittent rain and this prevents the raw material from drying out.”
He asked if the rains kept away for at least five consecutive days, would they get enough time to dry the raw material and resume the surfacing work.
One of the major works affected is the Pappanamkode – Malayinkizhu road work. Although most of the work has been completed here, but due to frequent rains, the surfacing work is not being completed.
Another project affected is the work of 11th Mile MS Road at Neyyattinkara (NABARD), of which 85% has been completed. The project deadline is set to end on November 30. If the weather remains unfavourable, the department will have to extend the contract period. The same is the case with the Attingal-Puthenpalem-Venjaramoodu 27 km stretch. More than 17 km of road work has been completed.
The Executive Engineer stated that the repair work on the Shangmugham-Airport road has not been affected, and is in progress. This is because the work currently being done there does not involve surfacing. It relates to the construction of a 300 m long diaphragm wall there.
In this regard, so far they have put piles of sheets in 210 meters and sand is being filled in it. The department has also started assessing the damage caused to the roads during the recent rains.
