RailTel confirmed that it is on the verge of providing Wi-Fi service at almost all railway stations in India, except halt stations.

The PSU also informed that out of the 6,100 stations where it provides Wi-Fi service, more than 5,000 are located in rural parts of the country.

The idea of offering free Wi-Fi service at railway stations was conceived in 2015 when Google had a strong role in marketing and communication about the service. RailTel played a key role behind the scenes, ensuring that the service never became a problem for the users.

Rural parts of the country do not have the luxury of premium internet service, especially on the fixed line front. But mobile connectivity is pretty strong these days, and affordable for many people to buy.
