Congress leader Rahul Gandhi undertook a truck journey from Delhi to Chandigarh on Monday night to connect with truckers and understand the challenges faced by them, the party announced on Tuesday.

In pictures and videos of the event, the former Congress chief can be seen wearing his iconic white T-shirt, sitting inside a truck with a driver and interacting with the drivers at a local dhaba.

“Leader of the people @RahulGandhi ji reached among truck drivers to know their problems. Rahul ji traveled with him from Delhi to Chandigarh,” Congress said in a tweet in Hindi, reported PTI,

Gandhi also stopped near a gurdwara in Ambala city on the Ambala-Chandigarh National Highway on Tuesday morning and offered prayers there.

“According to media reports, there are about 90 lakh truck drivers on Indian roads. They have their own problems. Rahul ji did the work of listening to their mind.

Haryana Congress President Uday Bhan told PTI That Gandhi traveled with truck drivers and stopped along the way to listen to their problems.

Congress social media head Supriya Shrinate shared photographs of Gandhi traveling in the truck and meeting the truck drivers.

“Rahul Gandhi is a different person. Today he is committed to bridging the widening gap between the general public and the government in this country. Then in this summer, sit with the truck drivers all night and listen to their problems or travel in the truck. Such a few have given hope for a better future!” he said in a tweet in Hindi.

Congress sources said Gandhi was on his way to Shimla to spend some time with his mother Sonia Gandhi and on the way he decided to listen to the problems of the truck drivers.

Ram Kumar, station in-charge of Baldev Nagar police station in Ambala city, said Gandhi got down from a truck near Gurudwara Manji Sahib on GT Road at around 4.30 am.

He went inside the gurudwara and offered obeisance and spent a few minutes there. Kumar said he also had tea at the ‘langar’ at the gurdwara.

Later, he again boarded a truck and left for Chandigarh, the SHO said.

Bhan said Gandhi keeps meeting people from all walks of life to know what problems they are facing.

He said, ‘During the Bharat Jodo Yatra also, Rahul ji interacted with people from different sections.’
