Senior Congress leaders ahead of Goa assembly elections early next year Rahul Gandhi State party chief Girish Chodankar on Tuesday said he would reach the coastal state on October 30 on a one-day tour.

Chodankar told PTI that during the visit, Gandhi will address a convention of Congress workers at the SPM Stadium in Bambolim near here and will also participate in other party-level programs to be held that day.

According to a senior party functionary, Gandhi will arrive at 11 am on October 30, after which he will travel to the International Center in Dona Paula, where he will hold a meeting with party officials.

Gandhi’s visit assumes significance as Congress gears up for state assembly elections next year. In the 2017 Goa Assembly elections, the Congress had won the highest number of seats at 17 in the 40-member house, leaving the main rival BJP at 13.

But the saffron party went on to form an alliance with regional parties and came to power under the leadership of Manohar Parrikar, who is now deceased. The Congress had accused the BJP of “stealing” the mandate, a charge that was rejected by the saffron party.

Over the years, the Congress’s strength in the state assembly has dwindled to four, when many of its MLAs switched sides and joined the ruling BJP.
