Rahul Gandhi meets family of 9-year-old girl, ‘raped, killed and forcibly cremated’

New Delhi: Congress Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met the family of a minor girl who was allegedly raped, murdered and cremated without her parents’ consent at Delhi’s Old Nangal crematorium.

Gandhi met the family of the 9-year-old victim and assured them of his party’s support in the fight for justice.

“I spoke to the family, they want justice and nothing else. They are saying that justice is not being given to them and they should be helped. We will do that. I have said I stand with them. Rahul Gandhi is standing. Till justice is done to them,” Rahul Gandhi said after meeting the family, according to news agency ANI.

Gandhi tweeted on August 3, calling the girl the ‘daughter of the country’.

He tweeted in Hindi, along with a screen shot of a news report of the incident, “Dalit ka bachcha bhi desh ki beti hai.”

After Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is also scheduled to meet the victim’s family at 11:30 am.

On August 2, after identifying the victim’s mother, the police arrested four suspects, including Pujari. The accused have been charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 376 (rape), 302 (murder), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 204 (destruction of evidence) and related sections of protection of children from sexual intercourse. Offenses (POCSO) Act and SC/ST Act.

The family members and relatives of the victim have been protesting since the time of the incident demanding death penalty for the accused.
