Rahul Gandhi: Army’s Rejection of Agniveer Scheme, INDIA Bloc

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said the Agniveer plan would be scrapped and ruined if the opposition Indian bloc comes to power and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ‘turning Hindustan into jawan workers’.

In his first rally in Haryana for the Lok Sabha elections, the former Congress president also attacked Prime Minister Modi against farmers.

Hitting out at the BJP government over Agniveer’s plan, he said: ‘This is Modi’s plan, not the army’s. The army does not want it.’

‘If the INDIA bloc forms the government, we will destroy the Agniveer scheme,’ he said during a rally under the Mahendragarh-Bhiwani Lok Sabha seat.

According to him, India’s borders are safe for the country’s youth, and ‘patriotism is in the DNA of our youth’.

Further attacking the BJP government, he said, ‘They say there are two types of martyrs – one is a common jawan and officer who gets a pension, martyr status, all services and on the other a person from a poor family. Agniveer, no martyrdom, no pension, no canteen service.

In 2022, the Center introduced the Agnipathi recruitment system for short-term familiarization of personnel with the armed forces intending to lower the age profile of the three units.

The system recruits 17 to 21-year-olds for four years, and 25 percent of them are retained for 15 years.

Targeting the plight of government farmers, Gandhi accused the Narendra Modi-led central government of canceling 16 lakh loans of 22 ‘Arabs’ (billionaires).

On June 4 (result day) when we come to power, we will waive the debt of farmers, he said.

Regarding the farm debt, we will bring a ‘Karza Maafi’ (debt relief) committee, the Congress MP added
