In a shocking revelation, veteran actress Radikaa Sarathkumar has shed light on the disturbing practices occurring across the Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam film industries. Her comments come amidst heightened scrutiny following the Hema Committee Report, which exposed rampant sexual misconduct in the Malayalam film industry.
Speaking to Asianet News’ Namaste Kerala, Radikaa detailed a harrowing experience where she discovered that hidden cameras were secretly recording women in their vanity vans. “I personally saw men sitting together on the sets and enjoying these scenes on their mobile phones,” Radikaa recounted. She described her fear of using her vanity van, opting instead to change at her hotel room to avoid such invasions of privacy.
Radikaa revealed an alarming incident where, while on a set in Kerala, she noticed crew members laughing at something on their phones. Upon investigation, she discovered they were watching footage of actresses changing clothes, captured by hidden cameras in their vanity vans. “While I was on a set in Kerala, I saw people gathered together and laughing at something. As I passed by, I noticed they were watching a video. I called a crew member and asked him what they were watching. I was told there were cameras in the vanity vans and footage of women changing clothes was captured using the same. I was told you just type the name of the artiste, and you will find a video of them changing dress. I saw the video.”
She chose not to name the specific location of the incident, saying, “If we spit looking upwards, it will fall on our face only. So I don’t want to take names.”
Addressing comments from fellow actress Urvashi, who stated that such issues are not prevalent in Kerala, Radikaa expressed differing views. “I watched Urvashi’s interview. She said there is nothing like it in Kerala. She is a fantastic actress and a good friend, but in this matter, we have different points of view. It happens not only in Kerala but also in other states.”
Radikaa’s statements come at a time when the release of the Justice Hema Committee Report has faced delays. Reflecting on the report’s delay, she emphasised the need for women to empower themselves to reject inappropriate behaviour.
