South Africa’s Quinton de Kock wears a black band in honor of the late Desmond Tutu during the first Test against India.

South African wicketkeeper-batsman quinton de kock announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect on Thursday.

The announcement was made after the Proteas’ first Test match against India at Centurion, where the visitors won by 113 runs to take a 1–0 lead in the three-match series.

According to Cricket South Africa (CSA), the 29-year-old de Kock cited the timing of his relatively early retirement from the format and his intention to spend more time with his growing family as the reason. “He and his wife Sasha are expecting the birth of their first child in the coming days,” CSA said in a statement.

Meanwhile, de Kock said, “It’s not a decision I’ve come to too easily. I’ve taken a lot of time to think about what my future looks like and what should be a priority in my life now when Sasha And I’m about to welcome my first child into this world and want to move my family through it.”

“My family is everything to me and all I want is the time and space to be with them during this new and exciting chapter in our lives,” he said.

The wicket-keeper batsman made his Test debut in 2014 against Australia. In 54 matches, he scored 3,300 runs at an average of 38.82 and a strike rate of 70.93 with a high score of 141 not out. He also has six centuries and 22 half-centuries to his name.
