Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus Announced with Faster Peak Core and AI Performance

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus is here, although we were already sure that it would be announced sooner or later. The upgraded version of the current generation flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 888, brings the same improvements over the latter as the Snapdragon 865 Plus did to its non-Plus brethren. Namely, it offers a faster peak core clock speed, and while the AI co-processing engine remains the same, it now gets better performance chops. The exact figures for this advanced performance can be significant — or even otherwise, depending on how much you’ve invested in consumer-grade mobile processing technology.

Coming to brass tacks, new Snapdragon 888 The Plus SoC now has a faster Kryo 680 boost core that Qualcomm says is clocked at 3GHz. The exact figure, the technical documents reveal, is 2.995GHz on the new chip, so it only represents a more than 5 percent performance increase from the peak core — 5.46 percent to be exact. From the 6th generation AI engine that resides in the Snapdragon 888 Plus, Qualcomm has managed to extract 32 TOPS of AI performance – up from 26 TOPS in the vanilla Snapdragon 888. This background marks a more than 20 percent improvement in AI processing prowess, which is a really big leap for this kind of mid-cycle chip refresh.

However, while these numbers don’t make much sense to us, the general user, in terms of their overall impact, it might do a bit better background processing of heavy AI and AR tasks. In other words, you may find flagships that deliver an even more immersive application usage experience. However, Qualcomm probably wants to assure you that it took its mid-life refresh of the Snapdragon 888 more seriously than it did the Snapdragon 865 Plus. Consequently, along with the announcement, Qualcomm also announced support for Asus, Honor, Motorola, Vivo and Xiaomi, all of whom have committed to launch flagship smartphones with new flagship SoCs soon.

Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 888 Plus will start appearing in devices starting in Q3 2021, which technically means we can start expecting some announcements with the 888 Plus starting in July – some Within days. More details should come to us soon as each, or any other, of these five OEMs gets closer to launching any of their upcoming flagship phones.
