After his selection, Dhami told the media on Saturday: “My party has appointed a common worker, son of an ex-serviceman, who was born in Pithoragarh, to serve the state. In March this year, after resentment against former CM Trivendra Singh Rawat, a then MP Tirath Singh Rawat was sworn in as the Chief Minister.

Rawat, on the other hand, had to secure an assembly seat by September 10 to retain his job.

Rawat himself did Kovid On 22 March, exactly 12 days after he was sworn in, and the timing of the same proved politically disastrous for him. His report came positive just a day before the Election Commission’s announcement that by-polls to Uttarakhand’s Salt Assembly constituency would be announced on March 23. This impending by-poll was on the BJP’s mind while electing Rawat, an MP, as the CM on March 10.

However, Rawat had to go into self-isolation for 14 days till the first week of April after being infected with Kovid, while the last date for filing nominations for the Salt bypoll seat was March 30. On Saturday, Rawat gave the reason for this. He could not contest the by-election. He had tested negative on April 4, ahead of the by-election held on April 17 and was eventually won comfortably by the BJP.
