Puri: With the countdown for the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri for the second time in a row without devotees, the district administration imposed curfew for two days from 8 pm on Sunday night.
65 platoons (1 platoon consisting of 30 personnel) were deployed for the smooth conduct of the annual festival of Lords amid the COVID-19 pandemic. draw The holy chariots will start from 3 pm on Monday.
Security forces will also be deployed on the roofs of various buildings on either side of the grand road to ensure that people do not gather in large numbers from residential houses, hotels, lodges and guest houses to watch the festival.
Though there was no such restriction on people watching the Rath Yatra from rooftops last year, the administration banned such practice this time as it was learned that some hotels, lodges and guest houses were not allowing people to watch. Even some local people had invited their relatives and friends to allow them to witness the festival from their homes.
Puri District Collector Samarth Verma said that during the curfew from 8 pm on Sunday to 8 pm on Tuesday, people are urged not to come out of their homes and crowd the grand road.
This measure is taken keeping in view the public health and to prevent the spread of infection among citizens.
He said that people can watch the festival on their TV sets as the government has made arrangements to provide free feeds to various channels and web portals.
Meanwhile, Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Chief Administrator Krishna Kumar formally invited Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Puri Govardhan Peeth, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati, to have darshan of the deity as per tradition before pulling the chariots.
The SJTA chief said that the Shankaracharya has accepted the invitation and he will be on a Rath Yatra on Monday along with six of his disciples.
The three chariots- Lord Balabhadras Taldwaj, Lord Jagannath Nadighosh and Goddess Subhadra Darpadalan, are ready to roll on the grand road, Director General of Police, Abhay reviewed the security arrangements and he also appealed to everyone including the people of Puri to cooperate in the implementation Curfew orders in the interest of the public.
Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh said, “With the cooperation of the residents of Puri and with the blessings of Lord Jagannath, all the rituals are going smoothly so far. We hope that the mega festival will be held peacefully tomorrow in compliance with all the SOPs.”
He said that all the lanes and sub-lanes of Puri city have been barricaded and adequate police force has been deployed.
All the entry points of Puri city have been sealed to ensure that no one can enter the grand road during the festival time.
Earlier in the day, three huge chariots were pulled towards the lion gate (Singhdwara) of the Shrimandir, when the ‘Agyan Mala’ (God’s command) chariot reached Khala.
The SJTA chief said only sevaks would be allowed to pull the chariot and no one else, including security personnel, would be allowed to touch the ropes.
Chariot pulling is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Monday, when the Puri king, Gajapati Maharaja performs the rituals of Divyasangha Deb Chhera Pahra (cleaning of the chariot).
The brother-sister procession would begin at 8 am, he said, adding that the program could be taken forward as the sevadars were cooperating fully with the administration.
Ahead of the festival, around 8,000 people, including servants, security personnel, SJTA officials, district administration officials, media persons and others, have undergone RT-PCR tests.
“Only COVID-19 negative persons will be allowed to participate in the festival,” he said.
Maintaining social distancing may not be possible in such a big festival as the procession of the deities requires the participation of more people, an official said, adding that the administration has ensured that only for COVID-19 Negative persons and those who are fully vaccinated be allowed to participate.
Arrangements have been made to provide health facilities to the chariot pullers. He said that a green corridor has been created for emergencies.
Meanwhile, the district administration of Kendrapara on Sunday also imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC to ensure smooth conduct of Rath Yatra rituals inside the temple.
Prohibitory orders are in force from 9 pm on Sunday to 9 pm on Monday with a big stick to prevent people from entering the Shri Baldevjev temple area. The local administration said in a notification that the restriction would remain in force from Shri Baldevjev Temple to Mausi Maa Temple.
Rath Yatra rituals will be conducted inside the temple. The order assumes significance in view of the increasing demand for organizing Rath Yatra in Kendrapara as well as in Puri following the COVID-19 protocol.
A section of the people had filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding permission for the Rath Yatra at Kendrapara. However, the top court refused to interfere with the state government’s decision during the pandemic situation.
