Punjab Poll Playbook: A strong pitch in Malwa is the reason behind the move from Dhuri to AAP

Fielding its chief ministerial face Bhagwant Mann from Punjab’s Dhuri constituency, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is sending a strong message to voters in the politically crucial Malwa region by installing party veterans as candidates.

Dhuri assembly constituency comes under Mann’s Lok Sabha constituency Sangrur and was instrumental in securing maximum votes in the 2019 general elections. Sangrur is divided into nine assembly constituencies, of which three are reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste category. This has worked in favor of Mann as his popularity transcends caste lines despite being a Jat Sikh.

In the last two assembly elections, 2012 and 2017, the Congress had won the seat. But in the 2017 elections, AAP had made strong inroads and the party’s candidate Jasvir Singh Jassi Sekhon was defeated by Congress MLA Dalveer Singh Goldy by a marginal margin of 2,811 votes. This seat comes in the most important Malwa region. By fielding Mann, AAP is giving the message that it is trying to oust Congress from power in many parts of Malwa.

The party has already announced the candidature of Harpal Singh Cheema from the Dirba assembly constituency, which is part of the region, focusing its attention on Malwa, which has 69 assembly constituencies.

Mann enjoys a strong support base in the region. Interestingly, in the 2014 parliamentary elections, fueling the Modi wave, Mann was one of the winners from Punjab who, according to polls conducted at the time, had the least number of seats to win compared to his other political opponents. money was spent. According to the Election Commission of India data, he used only Rs 1,000 out of his pocket, with the bulk of his money coming from party and donors. As per the final expenditure statement submitted by the candidates to the Election Commission, they had spent an amount of Rs 17.43 lakh in their election, while Rs 2.60 lakh was not spent in their voting account.

“It only shows that one does not need money power to win an election; It was because of Mann’s popularity that he won.”

Mann had won that election against his rival Akali Dal leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa by a margin of over 2 lakh votes. Mann continued his crucial hold in the 2019 elections as well, winning by a margin of over one lakh votes.
