The Punjab government has reached the Supreme Court on the issue of increasing the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF). The Punjab government said the BSF’s jurisdiction was increased from 15 km to 50 km without asking them. The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Center on the petition of the Punjab Government.

Till now the Punjab government was fighting a political battle on the BSF issue. However, now after the arrival of Advocate General DS Patwalia in Punjab, the government has moved the Supreme Court.

Congress MP Manish Tewari had also raised questions on the Channi government regarding this.

Punjab government said- interference in the rights of the state
The Punjab government argued that the Center’s increase in the BSF’s jurisdiction interfered with the state’s authority. This is not appropriate from the point of view of the geographical location of Punjab. The state government argues that due to this decision of the Center, about 27 thousand square km area has come under the jurisdiction of BSF. Which is half of Punjab. However, the BSF has clarified that it will cooperate only with the Punjab Police. From registering the case to the investigation and presenting the challan in the court, the Punjab Police will do the work.

BSF's IG Sonali Mishra had said that her job is only to cooperate with the Punjab Police.

After which the notification of the Center was canceled by convening a special session of the Legislative Assembly. However, BSF had started work in terms of its increased jurisdiction.
