Punjab fiasco may lead to split in Congress and G23 is now in wait and watch mode

A three-line secret letter written by Ghulam Nabi Azad to Congress President Sonia Gandhi during the Punjab riots last week, in which she called for an urgent Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on the issue of Presidential election on behalf of G23. asked for The Congress quickly replied that the meeting would be convened soon, however, no timeline was set or indicated.

The letter was preceded by a phone call with some members of the G23, and it was decided that “enough was enough” and they would not remain silent for long.

According to sources, some members of G23 want the fight to go ahead. They say that they do not want to be seen as spectators but as people concerned about the affairs of the party.

Sources say that some members of G23 believe that even though they are aware of the result, they still want to prove their point by contesting for the post of Congress President. A senior member of the group told News18.com, “This should not be seen as a rebellion, but an attempt should be made to show that the Congress is democratic and gives room for an alternative approach unlike the BJP.” But privately, he acknowledged that this would not bode well within the party and could even lead to a split between the G23 and the so-called loyalists.

But the catch here is that when Jitin Prasada’s father Jitendra contested against Sonia Gandhi for the post of party president in 2011, it created a ruckus. Interestingly, this happened in the backdrop of some Congress leaders opposing Gandhi’s control of the party as they felt that he did not have the capability to become the Congress President. Although Jitendra lost, many dissidents said that it was a fixed match. However, Gandhi made Jitin a minister during the UPA regime in 2004 despite several warnings. Clearly, Sonia wanted to send the message that there is no malice in her.

While the G23 criticism of the Gandhi family is not very sharp, it is clear that they realize that their time within the party may soon come to an end; At least for some of them. It is a wait-and-watch situation for many members of the G23, some of whom have little hope of political calm or rehabilitation. However, others are finding space amid anger that senior leader Kapil Sibal should have avoided holding a press conference at a time when the Congress is on the back foot in Punjab and the leadership of the Gandhi family is being questioned.

Now that Captain Amarinder Singh has not said anything, the tide of perception is turning against the Gandhi family and the loyalists are doing their best to stop it.

There is a prevailing sentiment that Rahul Gandhi wants a quick turnaround within the party, where his team and new young leaders take charge. Therefore, leaders like Jignesh Mevani and Kanhaiya Kumar were brought into the party to “replace” the old guard who may be dissatisfied. The battle lines are clearly drawn.
