Punjab elections: Harbhajan Singh’s retirement from cricket intensifies speculation of his joining politics

With the announcement of retirement from cricket, there are speculations whether Harbhajan Singh is going to start his political innings soon. Even though he has been inactive in cricket, the time for the announcement of Harbhajan’s retirement draws closer to the assembly elections in Punjab. In such a situation, there is speculation about his coming into the political field.

Recently there were reports that Harbhajan may contest the elections on a Congress ticket. There was a rumor that the party might field him from his home constituency of Jalandhar.

Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu had also indicated that Harbhajan may join the Congress party soon. Tweeting a picture with Harbhajan, she wrote: “A picture full of possibilities…. a shining star with Bhajji”.

When asked about the tweet, Sidhu had said that the picture says everything, that it is full of possibilities.

A report in the Indian Express also stated that Navjot Sidhu was trying to approach Harbhajan Singh to join the party to gain a strong lead in the Doaba region.

There was talk of joining BJP

Recently, there were rumors that Harbhajan might join the BJP, but he dismissed it saying that there was no truth in the reports of him joining the saffron party.

While he rubbished the news of him joining the BJP, he kept silent on the speculations of him joining the Congress. Now, an official statement from Congress and Harbhajan Singh in this regard is awaited as elections in Punjab are due early next year.
