Punjab election verdict: Navjot Singh Sidhu of Congress accepts people’s decision, congratulates AAP

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Navjot Singh Sidhu had contested the 2022 elections from Amritsar East. But after the eighth round of counting, it seems that the Congress leader is going to lose to Aam Aadmi Party’s Jeevan Jyot Kaur.

Sidhu, who previously served as the Minister of Tourism, Cultural Affairs and Museums of Punjab State, was also up against other candidates such as Bikram Singh Majithia of the Akali Dal and Jagmohan Singh Raju of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Ahead of the Amritsar pre-poll results, former cricketer Sidhu took to Twitter to congratulate AAP, saying: “People’s voice is God’s voice…. Accept the mandate of the people of Punjab humbly…. Congratulations!!!”

On a BJP ticket, Sidhu was elected to the Lok Sabha from Amritsar in 2004, defeating Congress veteran Raghunandan Lal Bhatia, popularly known as RL Bhatia. Sidhu resigned from the Lok Sabha in 2006 after being accused of murder. He was convicted of causing hurt in the 1988 road rage case.

But in 2009, he defeated his Congress rival Surinder Singla by 77,626 votes.

He did not run for the Lok Sabha in 2014, but was later appointed to the Rajya Sabha by the Narendra Modi government in April 2016.

In July 2016, however, he resigned from the Rajya Sabha and in September resigned from the BJP.

He then founded Awaaz-e-Punjab Front (AEP) along with Akali Dal MLA Pargat Singh and some other leaders, but it was soon disbanded.

However, later Sidhu joined the Congress in January 2017. He won the Amritsar East constituency by a margin of over 42,000 votes in the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections.

When he joined the Congress, Sidhu said that he was a “born Congressman” who went back to his roots.

In 2019, he resigned from the Punjab cabinet amid a tussle with the then Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. Sidhu posted a copy of his resignation on Twitter on 14 July, claiming that it was submitted to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on 10 June.

In July 2021, he was appointed as the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee in place of Mr. Sunil Jakhar. However, in September last year, he resigned as the chairman of the committee, but his resignation was rejected by the high command.
