Punjab Congress crisis: 78 MLAs wanted Amarinder Singh to be replaced: Surjewala

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing turmoil in the Punjab unit of the old party, Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said on Saturday that 78 out of 79 MLAs have written to the party high command demanding a change in the chief minister of the state.

“78 out of 79 MLAs had written that the Chief Minister should be changed. When a Chief Minister loses the confidence of the MLAs, he should himself resign from the post,” he said while commenting on the ongoing political crisis in Punjab Congress and former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

Surjewala’s revelations come months ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections and may give the opposition a new opportunity to target the Congress.

Earlier on 20 September, Captain Amarinder Singh tendered his resignation as the Chief Minister of Punjab, citing the “humiliation” he faced in the Congress party.

“In public I felt humiliated and personally hurt because my ties with the Gandhi family date back to the days when Rajiv Gandhi and I were in Doon School in 1954,” he said.

Captain Amarinder Singh had a long-standing dispute with Navjot Singh Sidhu before resigning from the post.

The former Punjab chief minister, who has also quit the Congress, has however made it clear that he is not joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The clarification came after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital.

Meanwhile, there are reports that the former chief minister may float his own political party. This is not confirmed yet.
