Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has urged the Center to start trade with the neighboring country of Pakistan. Channi said he would soon write to the Center pressurizing it to open business through the Attari border “to boost the economy of the state”.

Punjab is one of the four states sharing a border with Pakistan. Punjab shares a 425 km long border with the Punjab province of Pakistan.

Channi in his address during the 15th edition of Punjab International Trade Expo (PITEX) said, “If trade with Pakistan can be done by sea route, why not let it go through land route as it gives immense opportunities for economic prosperity. will be born.” Organized by PHDCCI in Amritsar on Monday. The CM’s statement comes two days after Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu advocated opening of trade with Pakistan through the Attari-Wagah land route.

Channi also said that a Digital Single Window System would soon be put in place to ensure a unified platform to the industrialists of all necessary permissions in a seamless manner.

“This move will allow them to apply for permission from their homes with the authorities to virtually remove the user interface, which will increase transparency,” Channi said.

Counting the achievements of his government, he said that the state government has withdrawn cases relating to 40,000 value-added tax registered against traders, besides abolishing institutional tax, land in case of expansion of factories and industrial areas. “We are also planning to start courses in educational institutions as per the demands of the industrial sector,” the chief minister said.

Citing Amritsar’s huge potential in religious tourism, he expressed satisfaction that Punjab has been ranked number one in terms of infrastructure development in the tourism sector.

On this occasion, Punjab Congress President Sidhu also underlined the importance of cross-border trade.

Describing Amritsar as Asia’s biggest market, he said that it would open new avenues of prosperity for Punjab as trade and trading activities would be done with 34 countries.
