LUDHIANA: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the rank of Additional Commissioner and a Superintendent of Customs Department in a bribery case.
The action was taken on the basis of a complaint filed by a businessman from Mandi Gobindgarh, who alleged that bribes were being demanded by the authorities for releasing two containers of scrap imported by him.
Both the officers were produced in the court of Special Judge for CBI Cases in Mohali on Thursday.
According to an official statement from CBI, “An additional commissioner and superintendent of customs department were arrested. The case was registered against the superintendent posted in Amritsar on a complaint alleging that the complainant runs a partnership firm. It was alleged that the superintendent demanded a bribe of Rs 1.50 lakh and informed the complainant that the said bribe money was to be shared with the Additional Commissioner, Sahnewal. Later, the bribe was reduced to Rs 1.30 lakh. The CBI laid a trap and caught the superintendent red-handed while demanding and taking bribe money. Subsequently, the role of Additional Commissioner, Customs Commissionerate in Ludhiana allegedly came to the fore and that too was caught.
