Punjab Assembly Elections: Election Commission allows postal ballot facility for 80+ voters, PWD and COVID patients. Chandigarh News – Times of India

Chandigarh: To encourage maximum voting in the upcoming punjab assembly electionsThe Election Commission of India (EC) has allowed voters above 80 years of age, persons with disabilities (more than 40%) and COVID-19 patients to exercise their franchise through postal ballots.
Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) S Karuna Raju said that out of 2.09 crore voters in the state, over 5.33 lakh are over 80 voters, while over 1.34 lakh come under the Persons with Disabilities (PWD) category. He said that PWDs can also avail pick-and-drop facility to reach the polling stations. He said that special arrangements are being made to encourage NRI voters holding Indian passports with voting priority so that they can exercise their franchise without any hassle. About 1.5 lakh volunteers of NSS, NCC and Bharat Scouts and Guides have been engaged for the convenience of the voters.
He said that the Election Commission is creating awareness under the slogan “Women, male ate transgender, democratic wich all equal” to encourage third gender voters to cast their votes. The CEO has also launched 30 mobile vans equipped with LED and audio system, which will move across the state to create voter awareness.
A special summary revision drive is underway to enroll eligible voters in categories including service voters, PWD, transgender and youth voters. The CEO said that he has received a demand for 700 companies of security forces from the district heads, but it is being reviewed. The Punjab government has allocated a budget of Rs 340 crore for conducting the assembly elections.
