New Delhi: After several political parties in Punjab urged the Election Commission of India Punjab (ECI) to reschedule the date of single-phase state assembly elections in view of Guru Ravidas Jayanti, the ECI has accepted the demand.
After a meeting on Monday, the Election Commission announced that votes in Punjab would be cast on February 20 instead of the earlier schedule of February 14. The Election Commission said in a statement that the elections will now be held on February 20. This coincides with the third phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh.

Congress leader and Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, the BJP and its allies and the BSP had urged the Election Commission to postpone the poll date as lakhs of followers of Guru Ravidas used to travel to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
Lots of people from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, about 32% of Punjab’s population, usually visit Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to celebrate Guru Ravidas Jayanti. The devotees of Punjab usually visit Varanasi from February 10 to 16 to celebrate Guru Ravidas Jayanti.
