The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) may announce alternate day water supply in the city from next week due to less rainfall and less water in the dams that supply water to the city.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar told that the availability of water in the dams has reduced due to the decrease in rainfall in and around the city. Due to which there will be alternate day water supply in the city from next week, he said, adding that a timetable for the same would be announced soon.

The water storage level has declined due to less rainfall in the catchment area of Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar and Bhama Askade dams, which supply water to Pune city.

“There is hardly 2.5 TMC of water in the dams that supply water to the city. The state water resources department has alerted the PMC to use water judiciously,” said a civic official.

While deliberating on the plan, an official of the Municipal Corporation said that water supply would be done on alternate days in such a way that only 30 per cent of water is cut in a day. “The civil administration also has to keep in mind the technical aspect of ensuring that there is no problem in the supply network. If not done properly, the system can break down,” he said. As per reports, the municipal corporation draws 1,650 MLD of water to meet its needs.

Meanwhile, the PMC is facing a lot of criticism for drawing more water than the allotted quota. The PMC has been demanding an increase in the water quota saying that villages have been included in the city limits and the population of the city has increased.
