On November 1, Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy will unfurl the tricolor here. Puducherry and its outlying regions of Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam merged with the Indian Union as a result of a plebiscite held at the border village of Kizoor on October 18, 1954.

A treaty was signed in the wake of the plebiscite between the then French and Indian governments and effected the de facto merger with the transfer of power from the French to the Indian government.

The legal transfer of power took place on August 16, 1962, and in view of the legal transfer of power, Puducherry, along with other territories, was made a union territory.

However, there have been demands for statehood to Puducherry by most of the governments. The resolutions were accepted on several occasions in the assembly and sent for grant of statehood to the Centre. But till now nothing happened.

Special arrangements are being made to celebrate this day. Regional Home Minister A Namasviyam was among those who greeted the people of the Union Territory on the eve of celebrating the actual merger day.
