Surat: A police sub-inspector (PSI) and his aide, an autorickshaw driver, were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 1.30 lakh for not making a travel firm owner accused in a bootlegging case in Surat.
The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) sleuths arrested PSI J H Rajput and his aide Jiyauddin Abdulrahim Saiyed alias Jivabhai while taking the bribe money from the complainant in front of the Puna police station in Surat.

According to ACB, Rajput had demanded Rs 5 lakh from the passenger bus operator for not making him an accused in a bootlegging case. However, after negotiations, the deal was finalised at Rs 3 lakh of which Rs 1.70 lakh was paid on Monday. The accused were nabbed when they came to collect the last instalment of the bribe money.
Rajput is currently posted with Puna police station’s surveillance staff. The ACB team was led by Tapi police inspector S H Chaudhary, under the supervision of N P Gohil, assistant director, ACB.
The complaint in the case was a travel firm owner who does booking for private buses plying between Rajasthan and Surat.
Investigation revealed that Puna police had recovered liquor from passengers on a private bus that was coming from Rajasthan. Rajput had threatened to make the complainant accused in the bootlegging case. He further threatened to book the owner of the travel firm that operates the bus service from Rajasthan.
Rajput had demanded Rs 5 lakh from the complainant for not making him an accused in the bootlegging case.
