A good news is coming for the residents of Mumbai regarding their property tax. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed officials to prepare a proposal to waive off property tax for flat owners living in areas up to 500 square feet.

In January 2022, Uddhav Thackeray, the then chief minister of Maharashtra, had also made a similar announcement to waive off property tax for owners of flats up to 500 square feet.

A similar offer is already being offered to residents of Navi Mumbai, a satellite city of Mumbai. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) passed a resolution to this effect in 2019 and sent the proposal to the state government. It is expected that the state government will take a final decision in the next few months before the next year’s elections.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) collects between Rs 4,000 crore and Rs 5,000 crore in property tax every year and the dues usually hover around Rs 1,500 crore.
