Process for appointment of new Lokayukta in final stage: Karnataka CM

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday said the process of appointing a new Lokayukta for the state is in the final stages and will be completed at the earliest.

The Chief Minister’s statement came a day after the Karnataka High Court indicated that the process of appointment of Lokayukta is under active consideration of the state government.

“According to me the process (appointment of Lokayukta) is in its final stages, it will be completed at the earliest, it will not take much days…,” Bommai told reporters in Mysore in response to a question.

Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, who is part of the panel along with leaders of the opposition in both houses appointing the Chief Minister, Speaker of the Assembly, Speaker of the Legislative Council and Lokayukta, indicated during a hearing. Public interest litigation on Tuesday, demanding the appointment at the earliest.

The petition, filed by advocate Umapati S, seeking a direction to the state for the appointment of Lokayukta at the earliest, said the post was lying vacant since January 2022. Justice P Vishwanath Shetty had stepped down as the head of Karnataka Lokayukta in January. Five years service.

A division bench of the High Court headed by the Chief Justice posted the matter for hearing again after 10 days. The court said that since the matter is sub-judice, the PIL can be disposed of.

But the petitioner-advocate has requested to keep it pending till the appointment citing earlier alleged instances where the court order was not complied with by the government. It has been said in the petition that due to non-appointment of Lokayukta, complaints and complaints are pending for disposal for many years and new complaints and complaints keep accumulating in the pending list of complaints and complaints.
