In the retention announced by the eight franchises ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, the biggest surprise was the release of ace leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). With 139 wickets, Chahal is RCB’s highest wicket-taker in IPL history. However, the franchise decided to retain the likes of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammad Siraj.
Former India opener and now commentator Aakash Chopra feels that Chahal will be a big ticket buy in the upcoming IPL 2022 auction. If Chahal is not picked by one of the two new franchises before the IPL 2022 auction, he believes he will get a huge sum.
“He is not getting his due, let’s be very honest. The level bowler he is, I think he should be treated better. RCB has not retained him in the IPL.
He added, “In my opinion, either he will go to the draft already, probably towards Team Ahmedabad. If he doesn’t go, he will be sold very dearly.” Chopra backed his opinion by citing the bowler’s performance in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, in which the Haryana spinner has taken 14 wickets at an average of 15 at a stingy economy rate of 4.35 RPO.
“He has taken wickets in every match and has been economical in every match. He has been very good,” he said.
As per reports, RCB were unable to retain Chahal as they could not reach a financial deal with him. While Kohli and Maxwell were relatively obvious choices for the franchise, with the former announcing his plans about continuing to play in the franchise as long as his plays, Maxwell’s stellar season ensured he was the second pick.
In fact, in the absence of AB de Villiers, who has retired from all forms of cricket, he is being described as the next captain and star player of the franchise. Siraj, however, was a choice that took many by surprise but was called sensible as the pacer has grown tenfold and become a key player for the franchise over the years.
