Bhubaneswar: The prisons directorate has proposed to the federal government to nominate 650 warders along with the prevailing 1,872 in all 87 jails within the state.
At current, 20,260 prisoners have been lodged in 87 jails. In accordance with norms prescribed by the bureau of police analysis and improvement (BPR&D), the warder- prisoner ratio must be 1:6, however in Odisha it’s 1:12.
The scarcity of guarding employees, significantly warders, has affected the distribution of responsibility as per guidelines placing a query mark on the safety of prisons. “Task of over and above the prescribed responsibility causes displeasure among the many guarding employees resulting from which the jail superintendents have been dealing with immense difficulties,” learn an official letter.
