presidential election: Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray had agreed to support the ruling National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate Draupadi Murmu. Some Shiv Sena MPs had earlier asked the party leadership to support Draupadi Murmu, the NDA’s choice for the presidency. According to sources, a letter of support may be issued from the Shiv Sena central office till Wednesday.

Along with this, 16 MPs have advised Uddhav Thackeray to compromise with Shinde faction and BJP.

Last week, Shiv Sena MPs Rahul Shewale and Rajendra Gavit wrote to Thackeray, demanding the withdrawal of Murmu from the party. The former Maharashtra CM had called a meeting of party MPs on Monday to take a decision on the presidential election to be held on July 18 next week.

Giving details about the meeting, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said, “We discussed Draupadi Murmu (NDA’s presidential candidate) in our meeting yesterday. Supporting Draupadi Murmu does not mean supporting BJP. After party chief Uddhav, the role of Shiv Sena will become clear in a day or two. Thackeray takes the decision. The opposition should remain active. We also have goodwill towards the opposition’s presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha. Earlier we supported Pratibha Patil, not NDA candidate. We also supported Pranab Mukherjee. Pressure.”

In the past, the Shiv Sena broke alliance with the NDA and supported the candidatures of Pratibha Patil and Pranab Mukherjee (both Congress leaders). Shiv Sena quit the NDA in 2019 and the Thackeray-led party formed the government with Congress and NCP in Maharashtra leaving longtime ally BJP.
