President Droupadi Murmu concludes Suriname visit; Addresses Indian Community before leaving for Serbia

President Suriname visit: On the concluding day of her visit to Suriname, President of India Draupadi Murmu addressed members of the Indian community at a reception hosted by Shankar Balachandran, Ambassador of India to Suriname in Paramaribo last evening.

Before the start of the reception, a two-minute silence was observed to mourn the loss of lives in the train accident in Balasore, Odisha.

Addressing the gathering, the President said that India and Suriname may be geographically separated, but the two countries are united by their shared history and heritage. Suriname and the people of Suriname hold a special place in the hearts of Indians.

The President was happy to note that the Indian diaspora in Suriname has been and continues to play an important role in the economic, political and social development of the country. He said that he has excelled in almost all fields. India takes immense pride in the achievements of the Indo-Surinamese people and their role in the development of Suriname.

The President said that the Indian community acts as a bridge of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. They expressed confidence that they would continue to work hard in their respective fields and further strengthen the unique relationship between India and Suriname.

The President said that today India is on the path of transformation. India is building new infrastructure to keep pace with the rapid growth. We are striving to take global leadership on digital economy, new technologies, climate change action; and emerging as a knowledge society. India’s remarkable economic resilience has earned international recognition. He said that India stands ready to share its experiences and support Suriname in its pursuit of progress and development.

Earlier in the day, the President visited Lalla Rukh Museum, Arya Devkar Temple and Vishnu Temple. He laid a wreath at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Paramaribo and paid tribute at the monument ‘Gavlen Helden 1902’.

Later in the evening, the President left for Belgrade – the last leg of her state visit to Suriname and Serbia.
