Preparations for 4 by-elections in Bengal on Saturday; Dinhata is the largest constituency with around 3 lakh voters, with 417 booths

On March 13 last year, in a freewheeling chat with News18.com, West Bengal MLA from Gosaba Jayant Naskar had said that ‘life is unpredictable’ and hence he made his own fiber statue so that people would always thank him for his good work. Remember. In his Bagukhali village in Canning subdivision of South 24 Parganas district.

“I made my own fiber idols and an idol because you never know what will happen to you next. Life is unpredictable,” Naskar had said.

Perhaps it was his deja vu as Naskar died after 15 months (on June 19, 2021) after the results of the assembly elections were declared on May 2. The same seat where polling is to be held on October 30.

In keeping with Naskar’s sentiments and his vision, TMC has fielded Subrata Mandal from Gosaba and the party is looking at a huge victory margin in the state with more seats than expected in the recently held assembly elections against the Trinamool Congress. has been

Although, it is not known why Naskar’s son Bappadiyata was not given a ticket to contest from Gosaba, but many felt that Subrata Mandal had a good leadership quality that could take Naskar’s vision forward in the field .

Apart from Gosaba, assembly by-polls to three other seats, Dinhata, Shantipur and Khardaha will also go to polls on October 30 and the counting of votes will take place on November 2.

Gosaba Assembly seat is a reserved constituency (Scheduled Caste) and is a part of Jayanagar Parliamentary Constituency.

To ensure free and fair elections, the Election Commission has already increased the strength of central forces to 92 companies in all the four Assembly Constituencies (ACs).

It was learned that the maximum number of paramilitary personnel will be deployed in Dinhata in Cooch Behar, which is close to the Bangladesh border and is a prestigious battle for the BJP as it was won by Nisith Pramanik who is currently a Union minister in the cabinet. . Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Dinhata will have around 27 companies of the central force. There will be deployment of 20, 22 and 23 companies of central forces in Khardah, Shantipur and Gosaba.

Among all the four constituencies, Dinhata is the largest with 417 booths and the number of voters in this constituency is more than 298000.

In Gosaba total number of booths is 326 (including auxiliary polling stations) and number of electors is 240000 (approx). CCTVs will be installed in 43 sensitive booths and videography of voting process will be done in another 30 booths for security.

BJP President, South 24-Parganas (East), Sunip Das alleged that TMC leaders were threatening BJP workers and their supporters in Gosaba. “We have informed the Election Commission about the issue and have demanded free and fair bypolls,” he said.

Khardah (North 24-Parganas) will have 336 booths and the number of voters will be 232300 (approx.), while Shantipur (Nadiya district) will have 358 booths and the number of voters will be 254893 (approx).

After the bypolls, eight companies of paramilitary forces would be retained till the counting of votes on November 2, EC sources said.

Dinhata is a prestige battle for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as it falls in North Bengal, a stronghold of the saffron brigade, which wholeheartedly supported them during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and helped them secure 18 seats. And this is also the seat. Which was won by the Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Nisith Pramanik in the recently held assembly elections.

Pramanik is very much emotionally attached to Dinhata and somehow he managed to retain the seat with just 57 votes against Udayan Guha of TMC. He was one of the BJP MPs who had won this year’s assembly election, but later resigned as he wanted to continue as an MP.

He did not even take oath as an MLA (after the election results were declared on 2 May) and this necessitated the by-election in Dinhata. This time TMC has once again fielded Udayan Guha from Dinhata. On the other hand, the BJP leadership has decided to field Ashok Mandal against the candidate of the ruling party.

Similarly, the Shantipur by-election was necessitated after the Jagannath government, who won the Shantipur assembly seat (after defeating TMC’s Ajay Dey by over 15,000 votes), later vacated it to remain an MP from the Ranaghat Lok Sabha constituency. This seat in Nadia district is again a prestigious battle for the BJP (which fielded Niranjan Biswas against TMC’s Vaishnava community member Brajkishore Goswami) as it is the constituency where the ‘Matua’ community is a deciding factor and they table can be changed. For any political party.

Speaking to News18.com, Nadia South BJP President Ashok Chakraborty said, “We are definitely winning Shantipur seat as the wave is in our favour.”

Khardaha by-election had to be held after the death of TMC MLA Kajal Sinha. This time TMC has fielded Sovandeb Chattopadhyay from Khardaha against Jai Saha of BJP. It is a prestigious fight for TMC as TMC MLA from Bhawanipur constituency Sovandev Chattopadhyay has resigned from the post – to make way for Mamata Banerjee.

According to the Indian Constitution, Mamata Banerjee, who lost her Nandigram seat in this assembly election, can run the state as chief minister, but she will have to be elected within the next six months to retain her post. Recently, he won the Bhawanipur by-election with a huge margin.

Since Sovandeb Chattopadhyay is an elected MLA, he has to win a seat within six months to retain his MLA membership and hence he was fielded by Mamata Banerjee for the by-election from Khardaha seat.
