The Finance Minister has gone to America to attend the annual meeting of the World Bank and IMF. During a discussion at Harvard Kennedy School in Boston, he was asked a question related to Lakhimpur.

The Lakhimpur case of UP and Ashish, son of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Mishra are also being discussed in America. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who went to attend the World Bank meeting, has been questioned about this. During a discussion at the Harvard Kennedy School in Boston, someone asked Sitharaman why the prime minister and senior ministers were silent on the Lakhimpur incident and tried to escape when someone asked a question. On this the Finance Minister also gave an accurate answer. Targeting the opposition, he said that the killing of 4 farmers in the Lakhimpur violence is certainly condemnable, but such incidents are happening in other parts of the country as well. Every such incident should be dealt with equally, and not if they are for you. This issue should not arise just because there is a BJP government in Uttar Pradesh.

Sitharaman said, ‘I would like that all of you people and Dr. Amartya Sen who know India very well should raise such issues every time. My cabinet colleague’s son is probably in trouble and let’s just say that whatever happened he did it, no one else did it. Even then the investigation process will be completed as per the law.

Sitharaman further said that it is not defensive about my party or the Prime Minister, but it is defensive about India. I will talk about India, I will talk about justice for the poor. We should talk facts. That’s my answer.

Agricultural laws were discussed from all sides
On the question regarding the performance of the farmers, the Finance Minister said that the three agriculture laws that the government has brought were discussed by different parliamentary committees for almost a decade. When BJP came to power in 2014, agriculture laws were discussed with all stakeholders including state governments. When the bills were brought in the Lok Sabha, there was a detailed discussion and the Agriculture Minister replied, but as soon as these bills reached the Rajya Sabha, a ruckus was created.
