Politics heats up in Madhya Pradesh over Khargone violence

VIJAYA: In Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh, politics has heated up in the state with the registration of an FIR against senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh amid tension after clashes during Ram Navami procession.

Rajya Sabha MP Digvijay Singh, who has held the district administration and police responsible for the communal violence, has posted a picture which shows a group of people waving saffron flags at a mosque. However, the picture turned out to be fake and later, Singh’s post was removed from his Twitter account.

State BJP leaders including Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Home Minister Narottam Mishra called Singh’s post a “conspiracy to spread communal violence in the state”.

Taking it further, the State Home Minister said that action will be taken against Digvijay Singh. After this, an FIR was lodged against Singh at Bhopal police station on Tuesday evening.

In response to the FIR, Digvijay Singh later on Tuesday evening wrote a letter to the Bhopal Police Commissioner and Shyamala Hills police station demanding registration of a complaint against Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for an old post on social media.

In the letter, Digvijay Singh mentioned that Chouhan had shared a morphed video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. “On 19 May 2019, Shivraj Singh Chouhan shared a tampered video of the then Congress President Rahul Gandhi. It was a criminal offense by Chouhan and action should be taken against him.”

The party spokesperson said that the Congress leader has also shared that video with the Bhopal Police Commissioner.

Meanwhile, action is going on against the rioters in Khargone by the police and district administration and so far about 100 people have been arrested. More than 50 buildings were also demolished till Tuesday evening.

However, several opposition parties have opposed the state government’s bulldozer action, arguing that any action without a proper inquiry would be injustice.

However, the state home minister justified the government’s action, saying those who could be seen throwing stones at the camera were being punished. And the buildings that were demolished were illegal.
