PM Narendra Modi moves to carve a slice of the $13 trillion green hydrogen pie for India – Times of India

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a formal announcement on Sunday National Hydrogen MissionPutting a truly zero carbon fuel – ‘green hydrogen’ – at the heart of India’s energy security as well as climate action, and assuring policy support to investors.
Setting the tone for the rapid energy transition in his Independence Day speech, PM Modi To increase the share of less polluting natural gas in India’s energy basket to become self-reliant in energy through electric mobility, 20% ethanol-blending of petrol and expansion of city gas network, set a deadline of 2047.
“For India’s progress, for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India)’, energy independence is essential. India has to take a pledge that the year we celebrate the 100th year of independence, that energy will be free,” PM Modi Said in his address to the nation.
Unveiling his vision to transform India into a global green hydrogen production and export hub, PM Modi said, “Green hydrogen will give India a huge leap forward in achieving its climate goals.” He said there is a need for a rapid transition to new-age fuels to reduce the country’s dependence on energy imports, which cost Rs 12 lakh crore annually, or five times the current health budget.
All the hydrogen currently consumed in India is extracted from fossil fuels, which emit CO2. Green hydrogen is produced by electrolyzing water using electricity from renewable sources and is expected to emerge as a $12-13 trillion global industry by 2050.
Manoj K Upadhyay, President, Solar Khiladi said, “The Prime Minister’s initiative can help the industry to create a domestic green hydrogen ecosystem of $2-3 trillion in 20-25 years.” ACME Group, Said.
The intention of the National Hydrogen Mission was announced in Budget 2021. Since then, Reliance Industries Limitedhandjob Indian Oilhandjob JSW Energy And NTPC Green hydrogen efforts have been announced. NTPC has floated a tender for hydrogen blending of CNG. Renewable Energy Minister RK Singh said graded use of green hydrogen is to be made mandatory for refineries and fertilizer units to create a market. It will be gradually expanded to other industries.
Energy, either in terms of reach or transition, has been one of PM Modi’s Independence Day speeches since he took office in 2014. So far the focus has been on access. With village and household electrification, as well as providing clean cooking fuel to the poor, the focus of his discourse shifted to renewable energy.
