An Ahmedabad court has issued summons to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh in a criminal defamation complaint against Gujarat University for their alleged sarcastic and derogatory statements regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational degree.

The court also ordered the removal of ‘Chief Minister’ from Kejriwal’s name in the cause title of the case, saying the statements were made by him in his personal capacity.

Kejriwal and Singh made the remarks after the Gujarat High Court ordered quashing of the Chief Information Commissioner’s order asking Gujarat University (GU) to provide information on PM Modi’s degree.

According to the complainant, he made “derogatory” statements at press conferences and on Twitter handles, targeting the university over Modi’s degree.

He said that his comments targeting Gujarat University are defamatory and hurt the reputation of the institution which has established its name among the public.

Gujarat University was established more than 70 years ago. The complainant’s counsel Amit Nair argued that it is prestigious among the people and the statement of the accused would create disbelief about the university.

The complainant alleged that the statements were defamatory to the University as they were sarcastic and were intentionally intended to hurt the reputation of the University. They were shared in the media and on Twitter handles with the same intention, he added.

The remarks quoted by the complainant and attributed to Kejriwal read: “If there is a degree and it is genuine, why is it not being given?” (a copy of it to Kejriwal under RTI), “They are not giving degrees because it could be fake,” and “If the Prime Minister studied in Delhi University and Gujarat University, then Gujarat University should celebrate that.” Our student became the PM of the country”.

According to the complainant, Sanjay Singh had said, “They are trying to prove the prime minister’s fake degree as genuine.” Four witnesses were examined and other evidence was presented during the court’s inquiry, and the counsel for the complainant argued that their statements would lead a person to believe that the GU issues bogus and bogus degrees.
