Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch Ujjwala 2.0 (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana – PMUY) on August 10 by handing over LPG connections in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh.

A government statement on Sunday said that during the program to be held through video conferencing, the Prime Minister will interact with the beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme and will also address the nation.

Describing the journey from Ujjwala 1.0 to Ujjwala 2.0, the release said that during Ujjwala 1.0, which started in 2016, a target was set to provide LPG connections to five crore women members of BPL families. Subsequently, the scheme was expanded in April 2018 to cover seven more categories of women beneficiaries: SC/ST, PMAY, AAY, Most Backward Classes, Tea Gardens, Vanvasi, Islanders. Also, the target was revised to eight crore LPG connections.

“This target was achieved in August 2019, seven months ahead of the target date,” the statement said.

The provision of one crore additional LPG connections under PMUY scheme was announced in the Union Budget for the financial year 21-22. These one crore additional PMUY connections (under Ujjwala 2.0) are aimed at providing deposit-free LPG connections to low-income households that could not be covered under the first phase of PMUY.

“With deposit free LPG connections, Ujjwala 2.0 will provide first refill and hotplate free of cost to the beneficiaries. Also, the enrollment process will require minimal paperwork. Ujjwala 2.0 will help achieve the Prime Minister’s vision of universal access to LPG. Will help,” claimed the release.
