PM Modi Speaks with Joe Biden After Air India-Boeing Deal, Discusses 1 Million Jobs, Advancing Economic Growth

Announcing the Air India-Boeing deal, Biden asserted that together with PM Modi, he is looking forward to further deepening the ties between India and the US.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday and the two leaders welcomed the historic agreement between Air India and Boeing as a shining example of mutually beneficial collaboration that will help create jobs in both countries.

PM Modi expressed satisfaction at India’s deepening partnership with the US, which has resulted in strong growth in all sectors. PM Modi invited Boeing and other US companies to make use of the opportunities arising due to the expansion of the civil aviation sector in India.

Boeing and Air India have reached an agreement under which the airline will buy 220 aircraft from Boeing – 190 B737 MAX, 20 B787, and 10 B777X – for US$34 billion.

“The leaders welcome the historic agreement between Air India and Boeing as a shining example of mutually beneficial collaboration that will help create new job opportunities in both countries,” said a government statement.

The statement came after PM Modi’s warm and productive phone call with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday.

There will be an option to buy 70 more aircraft, taking the total transaction value to USD 45.9 billion, the statement said.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden told PM Modi that the “historic” Air India-Boeing deal would create up to 1 million jobs across 44 US states.

Announcing the deal, Biden stressed that together with Prime Minister Modi, he is looking forward to further deepening the ties between India and the US.

The purchase, Biden said in the call, would support more than one million American jobs in 44 states, and many would not require a four-year college degree.

The Air India order is Boeing’s third largest ever in dollar value and second largest in terms of number of aircraft.
