PM Modi presents special meenakari gifts to VP Kamala Harris, fellow Quad leaders

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who pays great attention to every little detail of his special meetings, chose unique gifts for his special meetings in America. India’s relations with those countries had a message of belonging as well.

In his first meeting with US Vice President Kamala Harris, Prime Minister Modi gifted things that were associated with his special memories.

According to highly placed sources, PM Modi handed over documents of gazette notification related to his maternal grandfather’s government appointments and retirement in a wooden frame to Harris.

This included the appointment of PV Gopalan in the Ministry of Rehabilitation and the gazette notification issued on his retirement. Kamala Harris, whose mother is of Indian descent, has often publicly cited the influence of her maternal grandfather PV Gopalan on herself.

During an interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 23 September, Vice President Kamala Harris also mentioned the childhood days spent in India and the memories of her maternal grandfather.

Significantly, Kamala Harris’s maternal grandfather PV Gopalan was appointed to the Central Secretariat Services of the Government of India and later retired as Joint Secretary. During this period, he was also posted as Director General to help with refugee resettlement operations in Zambia.

PM Modi also presented Kamala Harris Chess made from the famous pink enamel of Varanasi. This chess with silver pieces has a very beautiful Meenakari.

PM Modi, who arrived in the US to attend the Quad leaders summit, also met Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga. PM Modi met both the leaders before the summit held under the leadership of US President Joe Biden.

Both the countries are important strategic partners of India. So special attention was given to every detail during those meetings.

A message of strong ties to maritime partner Australia

PM Modi handed over a silver ship made of pink enamel of Varanasi to the Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison, India’s neighboring country in the Indo-Pacific region. Meenakari work has been done in this ship with the shape and colors of peacock. It is 20 inches high and 13 inches long in size. Notably, India and Australia are now engaged in increasing partnerships in maritime trade through naval cooperation.

Interestingly, the Raisina Hills in the national capital, which houses the government office of the Indian Prime Minister, also has a pillar topped by a ship that was sent by Australia when Delhi became its capital.

Prime Minister Modi met another important strategic ally of India, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, where the two countries discussed partnership on infrastructure, economic investment and new technologies. PM Modi presented a statue of Lord Buddha on sandalwood to the Japanese PM. This idol is made in Rajasthani carving style. Buddhism is an old and strong bridge of ties between India and Japan.
