PM Modi on Birbhum arson: Urges people of Bengal to never forgive those who encourage criminals

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condemned the Birbhum violence, where at least eight people died on Tuesday in a suspicious outcome of the killing of a TMC panchayat officer. Terming the incident as a heinous crime, he urged the people of the state to never forgive the perpetrators of such incidents and those who encourage the perpetrators.

He also expressed hope on Twitter that the West Bengal government would take strict action against those involved in the incident.

From the Centre, PM Modi has assured the state that he will provide whatever help is needed to bring the perpetrators of the Birbhum violence to justice at the earliest.

Here’s what the CM says

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that strict action will be taken against those who perpetrated violence in Birbhum district. Banerjee said she would visit Bogtui village on Thursday to take stock of the situation, where houses were torched soon after the killing of the deputy head of a gram panchayat.

“It was an attempt by BJP, Left and Congress to defame our government. Strict action will be taken against all those responsible for the Birbhum incident, irrespective of their (political) colour. We have already removed the (police) in-charge officer, SDPO and other senior officers. The DGP is in the district since yesterday.”

Speaking at an event here, the CM also said that she had to postpone her tour of the district for a day as she did not want to get into a confrontation with leaders of opposition political parties camping there. Hitting out at the BJP, he said its leaders “blocked” their way into the “Linchet” district, stopping intermittently to taste ‘liangcha’ (a sweet originating in the Shaktigarh area of Burdwan district).

“I will go there (Bogatui village) tomorrow. I would have gone there today, but some political parties are reaching there. By the time they return it will be too late. I don’t want to visit the place when they (opposition leaders) are around. I don’t want to get into a fight.
