Assam Advanced Health Innovation Institute (AAHII) is a partnership between the Government of Assam and IIT Guwahati to set up a healthcare research institute to leverage advanced technologies to transform medical science.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Indian Institute laid the foundation stone of Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII) technology Guwahati today, 14 April.

Speaking during the event, Narendra Modi said, “Today the Northeast region of our country has got a boost in healthcare infrastructure. I am honored to dedicate the first AIIMS of the Northeast and three medical colleges to the people of Assam. I am happy to know that the Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute is being set up with the support of the Govt. Assam and IIT Guwahati will promote innovative healthcare solutions. Let us come together and ensure that we work in harmony to achieve our goal of Healthy India, Prosperous India and follow ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Prayas, Sabka Vikas’.”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “On the auspicious occasion of Bohag Bihu, we welcome PM Narendra Modi to Assam. IIT Guwahati and the Government of Assam envisioned a medical college where engineers and doctors work together towards medical innovation.” Will work. The Prime Minister has helped us realize the dream of Assam. Today he will lay the foundation stone of AAHII at the IIT Guwahati campus. In this Healthcare and Innovation Institute, doctors will work towards medical innovation and engineers will make healthcare ‘self-reliant’ We are confident that in the next three years this medical college will establish a synergy between technology and healthcare.”

Assam Advanced Health Innovation Institute (AAHII) is a partnership between the Government of Assam and IIT Guwahati to set up a healthcare research institute to leverage advanced technologies to transform medical science. The institute will also offer advanced medical degrees in Diplomate of National Board (DNB), Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Surgery (MS) and MD-PhD programmes.

Of God Iyer, Acting Director, IIT Guwahati, said, “AAHII will create an umbrella under which clinicians, scientists, engineers, doctors, design personnel, and regulators work together to invent and innovate technologies and meet diverse needs. will benefit the people of Assam. AAHII will consist of three major verticals, (i) an R&D block, (ii) a 500-bed super-specialty hospital and (iii) a post-graduate medical college. The R&D block will initially focus on stem cell , will start with six centers of excellence for cutting-edge research in digital health, therapeutics (drug design, delivery, informatics), precision medicine, robotics and affordable diagnostics.Super-specialty hospital Advanced robotic surgery, comprehensive transplant surgery, gene therapy , will fill the current void in Assam and the North-East of India by providing precision medicine, complex trauma care, state-of-the-art neonatology, neurosurgery and complex cardiac procedures among others.”

AAHII will be implemented through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), namely the Assam Government IITG Healthcare Foundation (AGIHF), a joint venture between the Government of Assam and IIT Guwahati. In the near future, this SPV will invite participation from corporates, business houses, research institutes and philanthropic organizations to collaborate on healthcare research and innovations.

AAHII will be a nationally and internationally ‘connected’ hospital cum research centre, thus enabling transfer of skills and knowledge to peripheral hospitals, thereby empowering them for better patient management through advanced skills. AAHII will have a simulation laboratory integrated with augmented and virtual reality (AR-VR) facilities that will enhance the skills of doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers. Through integrated and seamless functioning among these elements, AAHII will provide the foundation for providing evidence-based healthcare to the state as well as the country.
