PM Modi in Rajkot: ‘No work has been done in 8 years that will make Indians hang their heads in shame’

Recapitulating his eight-year term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Said on Saturday that he did not do any such thing that would make Indians hang their heads in shame. Modi, who completed eight years as Prime Minister on May 26, said that he has left no stone unturned in serving the country and made a sincere effort to build the country. India that Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel dreamed of.

Addressing a gathering after the inauguration of a 200-bed multispecialty hospital in Gujarat’s Rajkot district, Modi said the BJP-led government at the Center worked during this period to protect the dignity of the poor. He was on a tour of his home state six months before the assembly elections to be held in December.

“I have left no stone unturned in the service of the nation in the last eight years. I have neither allowed, nor personally done any such act that would make you or any person in India hang your head in shame. In the last eight years, we have made a sincere effort to build the India of the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel,” he said during his speech in the city of Etcote.

The PM said, “Mahatma Gandhi wanted an India in which the poor, downtrodden, tribal and women are empowered, where cleanliness and health are part of life, where the economy is based on swadeshi (local) solutions.”

He gave details of the works done by the Central Government in the last eight years and said that more than three crore families have been provided with pucca houses; 10 crore families got toilets, nine crore women got LPG connections under Open Defecation Free Initiative; 2.5 crore families got electricity connections while six crore families got tap water connections; More than 50 crore people were covered for free treatment under PM-JAY.

“These are not just statistics, but it is a testament to our commitment to provide respect to the poor of the country. In the last eight years, my government has worked for the upliftment of the poor,” Modi said.

He said that the Center opened food grains for the poor during the Covid-19 pandemic. “As in the pandemic, people faced difficulties in getting food supplies. That’s why we opened the country’s food grain stock for the poor. We provided financial assistance in Jan Dhan bank accounts of women during the pandemic. We opened up our health services,” he said, “and when the vaccine came, we ensured that every Indian was vaccinated and that too free of cost.

Talking about poverty, PM Modi said that he does not need to learn through books or television to know the plight of the poor, as he himself has gone through such a phase.

Modi praised the “double engine” government at the Center and in his home state Gujarat. He said this has ensured rapid development of the state, which he said was not the case before 2014.

“Due to the double engine government, Gujarat is achieving new heights of development. Before 2014, things were different. We used to send files of any development project to the Center (UPA government), they would reject it. They could not see any development project…,” he said.
