As the world turns its attention to meeting global climate goals, it is the automobile industry that has seen change internationally. This shift towards a zero-emissions future has introduced us to vehicles that will help us meet our low temperature goals of 1.5°C. A start has been made toward that end by shifting gears for the shift from internal combustion engine vehicles to zero-emissions electric vehicles.
The concept of EV vehicles is a term associated with the present, thanks to technology and legislation paving the way for the future. Interestingly, it is a fact that electricity has been used for electric transport since more than 100 years ago. Many experiments were done in the 19th century, and in 1834, the first battery-operated motor was successful. Electric vehicles, including trams and even trains, emerged in the mid-1800s. It did not have much commercial success given the limitations of rechargeable batteries etc.

the beginning of a change
If we look at the present time, there are three main areas of change that are happening in relation to the change in EV. The automobile industry we are talking about here is undergoing major changes that will shape that paradigm shift. Regulation and policy, ensuring public awareness, influencing consumer action, and developing new technology are the key factors initiating this positive sentiment. It is set to drive a change that will propel the world to a point where most geographies will be driving electric vehicles by 2030.
In India, the Center and the states are committed to implementing the policies. It will help in meeting the challenges faced with streamlining the mechanics, manufacturing and charging infrastructure of the supply chain. In the UK, industry observers suggest that a critical point where EV sales rapidly outpace petrol and diesel vehicles has already occurred. Supporting this belief are announcements from major automakers. While Jaguar announced its plan to only sell EVs from 2025, Volvo said it would do the same from 2030.
It is set to completely change the landscape. On the policy front, there has to be an alignment of climate, energy, transport and taxation that work together to meet our emissions targets through EVs. As EVs join the future of commuting, public awareness has also increased. This has changed in the past given the range of electric vehicles from range-concern issues to the adoption of alternative and sustainable mobility modes in their rides.

The EV sector in India has started to emerge from its infancy and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 90% from 2021 to 2030. EV penetration is expected to increase and move upwards of 1.3% as the market moves up. Vehicle sales that he has at the moment. Our ability to operate on a model that makes shared, electric and connected mobility a reality, government and industry believe, will take India to the emissions limits set for 2030.
In India, considering the diverse mobility offered by our country, there are a wide variety of vehicles that are now available in various electric variants. While there are two, three and four wheelers along with electric city buses which are now run by the government, the good old humble bicycle is also available in its electric form. E-bikes are proving to be an excellent solution to clean zero-emissions intra-city movement.
E-bikes are increasingly viewed as a practical mode of transportation, which has seen an increase in popularity ratings recently, given the added touch of health and fitness. In addition to being lighter than electric two-wheelers and having easier parking space, riding an e-bike does not require a driving license. While the automobile industry grapples with battery charging issues, battery swapping issues, solutions for lighter weight and larger capacity vehicles, e-bikes have overcome most of the limitations faced by city riders.
As cities around the world embrace the vision of the future and aim to become sustainable, human-centred, CO2-neutral, we need to integrate road engineering with intelligent transportation and data-driven solutions. For us to plug into the future as the global automobile industry shifts its focus to EVs, we will need to think smart and support it with research that goes hand in hand with shared leadership of the private and public sector in execution .
