Fans blame Indore pitch after India were bowled out for 109 as few others wonder how Aussie will fare

Australia bowled out India Spinner Matthew Kuhnman took five wickets and Nathan Lyon took three in their first innings just after lunch on the first day of the third Test on Wednesday.

Virat Kohli top-scored with 22 in Indore and was followed by opener Shubman Gill, who scored 21, in place of the struggling KL Rahul. Kuhnmann took 5-16 and Lyon took 3-35.

The fans were not happy with India’s total but were wondering how the Aussies would fare on the Indore pitch:

Tourists Australia, trying to fight back after being thoroughly outplayed in the first two Tests, introduced spin in the sixth over after India elected to bat first.

This frenetic opening session brought immediate reward, with Kuhnmann stumping skipper Rohit Sharma for 12 off his left-arm spin.

Shubman Gill, making up for struggling KL Rahul, attempted a comeback with three fours but fell to Kuhnmann for 21.

Senior off-spinner Lyon then bowled Cheteshwar Pujara with a delivery that spun and stayed low.

Wickets kept falling with Lyon getting rid of Ravindra Jadeja for four and Shreyas Iyer being bowled by Kuhnmann for a duck as India slumped to 45-5 in the first hour’s play.

Virat Kohli looked positive in his 22-run innings but was trapped leg before by Todd Murphy, the third time the off-spinner has taken the star batsman’s wicket in as many matches.

Early in the game, left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc had Rohit caught behind, but the appeal was turned down and Australia did not review, only for replays to show that the batsman had edged the ball out.

Three balls later, Australia lost another review on Rohit after the ball hit the batsman’s pads and tracker technology suggested LBW.

But Rohit, who scored a century in the last Test, could not last long, nor could the rest of India’s top and middle order survive.

India already have a 2-0 lead in the four-match series to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
