Oil prices in the international market have increased in response to expectations of increased demand in the coming year

India is making progress in building better energy security. The country has already set a deadline to achieve 20 percent ethanol-blended petrol and is looking at buying oil from Guyana in the long term. Meanwhile, oil prices in the international market are rising in response to expectations of increased demand in the coming year. The prices have come down after the government cut excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 and diesel by Rs 6 on May 21 last year. The price of petrol remained close to Rs 100 in the metropolitan cities of India. Petrol was selling at Rs 96.72 per liter in Delhi, while it was selling at Rs 106.31 per liter in Mumbai. One liter of petrol costs Rs 102.73 in Chennai, while the same amount of petrol costs Rs 106.03 in Kolkata.

Diesel price in India was relatively cheaper than petrol. One liter of fuel costs Rs 89.62 in Delhi and Rs 94.27 in Mumbai. Fuel price per liter in Chennai stood at Rs 94.24. Diesel closed at Rs 92.76 per liter in Kolkata.
