Petrol prices increased by only 5% in developed countries against 50%: Hardeep Puri

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in Lok Sabha on Tuesday that after the Russo-Ukraine war, petrol prices in India have increased by only 5 per cent, while some developed countries have increased by more than 50 per cent. Intervening in a short-lived discussion on the ‘situation in Ukraine’ in the Upper House, the minister dismissed the opposition’s charge that Operation Ganga was ‘Operation Transport’ and not ‘Operation Evacuation’.

The minister, who was one of the special envoys sent to countries bordering Ukraine to coordinate the evacuation of Indians from the war-torn nation, said that the Indian government has taken steps to transport stranded students to the border countries in the final phase of Operation Ganga. Citing statistics, the minister said the increase in petrol prices in India was very low in comparison to the developed and other developing countries after the war. He said that in countries like US, UK, Canada, Germany and Sri Lanka, petrol prices have increased by more than 50 per cent. He said the growth in India’s case was only 5 per cent.

Puri also pointed out that the price of natural gas in the international market has increased manifold since the start of the war. The minister also denied the opposition’s allegation that the advisory issued by the Indian mission to the students before the actual war broke out was unclear and unclear.

He said the consultation was very clear and advised Indian students to leave the country and that around 4,000 students actually left Ukraine before the war started. Many students chose to stay back, perhaps on the advice of Ukrainian educational institutions that things would return to normal, or for fear of losing a year if they decided to leave, he said.

Later, under Operation Ganga, 18,000 stranded students were brought home from different countries bordering Ukraine, he said. The Indian mission in Ukraine acted actively by asking the students to register themselves before the actual war broke out.
