Petrol, diesel slashed in Delhi, Mumbai: Check fuel rates after excise duty cut

Petrol, Diesel Prices on Thursday: Petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged across the country on Thursday 26 May. Petrol in Delhi costs Rs 96.72 per liter while diesel costs Rs 89.62. Data available on the Indian Oil Corporation website shows that the current price of petrol in Mumbai is Rs 111.35, while diesel is being sold at Rs 97.28.

Rates of both the major auto fuels were sharply reduced on Sunday after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a reduction of Rs 8 per liter in excise duty on petrol and Rs 6 per liter on diesel on Saturday. Following the government’s decision, the price of petrol in the national capital was cut by Rs 8.69 per liter on Sunday, while that of diesel by Rs 7.05.

Public sector OMCs including Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) revise fuel prices daily in line with benchmark international prices and foreign exchange rates. Any change in the prices of petrol and diesel is effective from 6 am every day. Retail petrol and diesel prices vary from state to state due to local taxes such as VAT or freight charges. Following the central government’s decision to cut excise duty, several state governments reduced VAT on petrol and diesel.

Following the central government’s announcement on reduction in excise duty, the Kerala government announced a reduction in tax on petrol and diesel prices by Rs 2.41 and Rs 1.36 per liter respectively. The Rajasthan government has reduced VAT on petrol by Rs 2.48 per liter and on diesel by Rs 1.16 per liter. The Maharashtra government reduced VAT on petrol by Rs 2.08 per liter and on diesel by Rs 1.44 per liter. The Odisha government has also reduced taxes on petrol and diesel by Rs 2.23 and Rs 1.36 per liter respectively.

Oil prices rose on Thursday, extending a cautious rally on signs of tight supply this week on plans to ban imports from Russia, the world’s second-largest crude exporter, after the European Union (EU) invaded Ukraine. fought with Hungary. Brent crude futures for July settlement were up 7 cents, or 0.1 per cent, at $114.10 a barrel by 0142 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for delivery in July was up 22 cents, or 0.2 per cent, at $110.55 a barrel.
