Petrol in Chennai is being sold at Rs 102.63 per liter and diesel at Rs 94.24 per liter on Sunday. In Chandigarh, Punjab, the price of petrol is Rs 96.20 and the price of diesel is Rs 84.26 per litre.
In a tweet on Saturday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “We are reducing the Central Excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per liter and on diesel by Rs 6 per litre. This will reduce the price of petrol by Rs 9.5 per liter and that of diesel by Rs 7 per liter. This will have a revenue implication of about Rs 1 lakh crore per annum for the government. ,
Further, in response to the opposition, which accused the central government of slashing the excise duty shared by the states and cheating the people with “data juggling”, Sitharaman on Sunday said that petrol and Excise duty deduction on diesel is not shareable with the states.
In a series of tweets, the Finance Minister explained, “Basic Excise Duty (BED), Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED), Road and Infrastructure Cess (RIC) and Agriculture and Infrastructure Development Cess (AIDC) together on petrol and diesel. constitute excise duty. Basic ED can be shared with states. SAED, RIC and AIDC are non-shareable.”
The Finance Minister said that the reduction in excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per liter and on diesel by Rs 6 per liter (effective from today) has been done entirely in the Road and Infrastructure Cess (RIC).
