Addressing media persons after the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Preston Tynsong said, “In line with the advice of the Government of India, the state government has decided that further reduction in petrol and diesel prices is to be implemented immediately from midnight. “
Tinsong also reminded that the state government had earlier reduced the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol to 20 per cent and on diesel to 12 per cent.
“With today’s decision, we have reduced the tax percentage on petrol from 20 per cent to 13.5 per liter and on diesel from 12 per cent to 5 per cent per litre. If this is converted into hard cash then it becomes Rs 5.20 per liter for both petrol and diesel,” he said.
The Deputy CM said that the prices of petrol and diesel in the state are the lowest in the country, as of today, the price of petrol in Guwahati, Assam is Rs 94.58 per liter, while in Birnihat, Meghalaya it is Rs 92.38 per litre. Whereas in Shillong it is Rs 93.91 per liter.
Similarly, diesel costs Rs 81.29 per liter in Guwahati, Rs 79.41 per liter in Birnihat and Rs 80.57 per liter in Shillong.
“Therefore, the total relief on petrol is Rs 10.95 per liter in Birnihat and Rs 11.08 per liter in Shillong, while the total relief for diesel in the entire state of Meghalaya is Rs 16.67 per liter,” he said.
When asked, Tynsong said that the state will suffer a revenue loss of about Rs 100 crore in the next five months from November to March 31, 2022.
