Petrol and diesel prices remained stable across the country on Tuesday, January 11. Rates have been stable for more than two months. In November last year, the central government reduced the excise duty on petrol and diesel. The decision brought down retail pump rates from record high prices, as excise duty on petrol was reduced by Rs 5 and Rs 10 per liter respectively to relieve consumers from the hike in fuel prices. Following this amendment, several states, mostly governed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and allies, have reduced the value added tax (VAT) on both auto fuels. On December 1, the Delhi state government also decided to reduce VAT on petrol prices from 30 per cent to 19.40 per cent, bringing down the price by Rs 8.56 per liter in the national capital and selling it at Rs 95.41.
On Tuesday, petrol consumers in Mumbai will have to pay Rs 109.98 per liter. Diesel price in the country’s financial capital is 94.14 per liter. Notably, Mumbai had the highest fuel prices among metros before the November revision. In Chennai, drivers will have to pay Rs 101.40 per liter of petrol and Rs 91.43 per liter of diesel. The price of petrol and diesel in Kolkata was Rs 104.67 per liter and diesel was priced at Rs 89.79 per liter respectively.
Meanwhile, global benchmark oil prices rose on Tuesday after two days of losses. Markets expected a possible rate hike from the chairman of the US Federal Reserve and as some oil producers continued to struggle to ramp up production, Reuters reported.
After falling 1 percent in the previous session, Brent crude futures were up 26 cents, or 0.3 percent, at $81.13 a barrel by 0156 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were up 30 cents, or 0.4 per cent, at $78.53 a barrel after falling 0.8 per cent in Monday trade.
